First of seven hikes in the Walk in Wonder 2026 hike-a-thon.
Over the next few weeks, Amy and I plan to hike seven nature preserves, as part of Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy’s “Walk in Wonder Hike-a-thon.” We’ll be sharing photos and info from each hike, and welcome any comments or questions you might have.
Our first hike is Springhill Preserve in Superior Township. The property is small (30 acres) but rich in biodiversity. It also abuts Kosch-Headwaters Preserve (160 acres, owned by the county) so you can easily hike a couple hours if you combine them. The Springhill trail runs next to a field and then loops through a mature beech/maple/oak woods. We’re always excited to hike this trail because of the buttonbush next to the pond. That’s the spiky white globe in the photos!
The beautiful blue bird is an Indigo Bunting. (It has an amazing song, but you’ll have to go to hear it!) The butterfly is is an Eyed Brown (I think!) and the dragonfly is a Green Darner.
